The OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model Series was back in action this weekend at Flamboro Speedway in their annual Oktoberfest Classic event that saw the oval Outlaws running both Saturday and Sunday. When all was said and done, it was Glenn Watson who went home with the hardware, capping off the season sweep of Flamboro Speedway.
It’s been an up and down season for Watson and the #22 team. They kicked off the 2007 season the same way they finished the 2006 season, taking the checkers in round one at Flamboro back in May, but haven’t been able to repeat in the feature win category until now. Then again, not many have pulled that feat off this season as only two other drivers have managed to visit victory lane more than once. The Race2way.ca/Rival Office Solutions #22 of Watson was fast all weekend, and with an inside second row starting position for the feature he could see the front from the beginning.
After the lap 10 restart, he got underneath the #99 of Tim Watson for the lead and set sail, turning in 15 second laps and was not to be seriously challenged for the rest of the night. Reflecting on his sweep of the 2007 Flamboro series, Watson was very happy, “Yeah, I think Flamboro is going to be our favourite track from now on. The car was awesome so I have to thank my crew again. It was strong all night. I want to thank all my sponsors: Rival Office Solutions, Race2Way.ca, Vital Signs and Graphics, Huronia Landscaping and Top Shops Autobody Supply.”
Putting in an impressive charge through the field and providing the come-back story of the weekend was the Kerr Cadillac Goodwrench Service/Douglas Engines #03 of Shane Maginnis. After getting caught up in trouble during one of Saturday’s heat races, the #03 team packed up and left the track early to get to work on the car. They were back Sunday and ready to race, but had to start scratch on the field.
By lap 18, Maginnis had charged his way into the top three, and on a lap 27 restart was lined up right behind Watson. “At the start of the race the Kerr Cadillac Goodwrench Service car was really good – it was fast! There were some lucky breaks that helped, but after working from the back, I used up the tires and started to get loose near the end. John raced me clean. I want to thank my engine builder Dan, all my crew, my Dad, my wife and my daughter Sara.”
Coming home third and perhaps passing the most cars of anyone was the JNE Consulting #61 of John Fletcher. Starting sixth on the grid, Fletcher raced his way up to fourth before having to make a couple of pits stops under cautions and had to come through from the rear of the field. “We had a good car. After the lap ten wreck, the toe was bent and the spindles were bent”, said Fletcher. “I want to thank my crew for another great night of working on the car. It took us from the back and we’re happy with third.” It was another good points night for the #61 team as they have been making up ground on the points leader in recent weeks and are still within striking distance heading into the last race on the schedule.
Rounding out the top five were the London Mechanical Plumbing and Heating/JBM Leasing #49 of Rob Clarke who also had to make a couple of pits stops to repair damage and come from the rear, and the Ken MacKinnon Construction/Lafarge Concrete #99 of polesitter Tim Watson with his second top five of the season.
Heat race wins on Saturday went to the #22 of Glenn Watson, the #49 of Rob Clarke, the #20 of Shawn Chenoweth, and the #61 of John Fletcher.
Next up, and final race of the OSCAAR 2007 season is the 15th Annual Autumn Colors Classic at Peterborough Speedway next weekend, October 6th and 7th.
