The 12th Annual Don Biederman Memorial race was held at Kawartha Speedway this past Friday August 6th and it was Jeff Hanley emerging victorious for his 3rd consecutive Biederman win. During the first half of the race, Hanley in the Raylene Racing #70 battled through the field from 8th on the starting grid. It took several laps to get by Drew Spicer and then at the mid-point of the race there was another good side-by-side battle with race leader Derrick Tiemersma. From lap 35 until near the end there was a close battle with the 70, 7 and 9 cars racing in a tight pack, until the final few laps when Hanley had built a multi-car lead over the 7 and 9.
“The racing was good. It was really hard to pass. We raced bumper to bumper for 6 or 7 laps before I could get by them. It looked pretty fair and it was good racing for the fans.” said Jeff as he referred to the hard racing he did over the first half of the race. He made particular mention of racing with the 89 Outlaw car: “I run wide open the whole time without sliding the tire. It was hard getting by Drew Spicer – he ran a good race tonite.” The Spicers Towing 89 car would finish the night in 4th, matching Spicer’s other season best finish of the year which also took place at Kawartha on June 4th.
The longest battle of the night was among the top three finishers, one of which was Derrick Tiemersma who finished 2nd. Tiemersma in the Wayfreight #7 car initially raced with pole-sitter #77 George Wilson. Wilson led for 20 laps with Tiemersma close behind and the two were clearly the front runners early in the race. Eventually Tiemersma would take the lead and hold it for 18 laps. Wilson lost several laps while pitting for mechanical problems and while he returned with a strong car, he was no longer in the run for a win.
“It was nice to take a couple of weeks off, relax a bit and maybe get a little bit back into racing” said Derrick, “Whatever happened at Mosport, we didn’t like it, so tore the whole car down and put it back together again. Obviously it paid off, the car was good. Gotta thank Wayfreight and all my guys for working so hard this past couple of weeks getting it back to the racetrack.” He went on to reflect on the past few weeks, “It’s been 25 years or so since I took a night off from racing, so it feels good to come back and get a 2nd in the Biederman. First would have been nice – but congratulations to Jeff and Brandon raced me clean so it was good.”
The Smart Exchange #9 of Brandon Watson finished in 3rd for Watson’s 2nd podium of the season. Starting 10th on the grid put Watson in the middle of some fierce and competitive race action over the first half of the race. Through it all he kept the car moving in the right direction and found himself racing for 3rd with Tiemersma. It was a clinic in nose-to-tail racing without contact as the 9 and 7 raced hard for many laps.
“We had a good car right from the trailer, made a couple of adjustments to get it as good as we wanted” said Brandon, “In the feature I think we were great. Unfortunately we started toward the back a bit, behind the two top finishers. I tried a few times to get underneath the 7 but he ran a good race. Overall it was a good night.”
Jeff Dunford proved again that the Malcolm Wallace Automotive Repair #7T is on track for a banner year in OSCAAR by finishing 5th in the Biederman and picking up his 2nd straight top 5 result. Dunford now has a firm grip on 3rd in the points and is in striking distance of 2nd overall.
Three drivers made their first appearances of 2010 at the Biederman. West Lee Talons brought out the #21 Outlaw but remained pit-side sorting out some difficulties. Shawn Chenoweth brought his Late Model to race with the Supers but was sidelined early in the feature. The heartbreak of the night has to be John Fletcher in his freshly rebuilt #61 Outlaw car. Fletcher was moving up through the field when he crashed into the wall on lap 34. The crash damage ended his night and hopes of once again hoisting the Don Biederman Memorial Trophy. Best of luck to John and his team as they re-group and make repairs.
